A single wheel takes at least one year to age, 131 gallons of milk to make, and it can only be made in a restricted area in northern Italy, in the region of Emilia Romagna. With cheese its understandable as wine it has to get old and gain taste.
It is not with F 35s worth billions of dollars and Abrams tanks. There worth this much Becouse of being newest technology.

I recently bought parmesan reggiano along with grana padano and pecorino for the first time from my local store, a small block was $10 and my mom freaked out, but once I started grating it and adding it to my lasagna, it tasted so different but so delicious, way better than the kraft stuff in the jar. Worth it imo i cannot go back lol

That's quite an absurd notion that Parmigiano reggiano is 'so expensive', minding that just for a few euro you can consume (personally) enough cheese to clog your arteries. I love the wonderful parmesan and consume it regularly. Calculating that although the whole wheel of Parmigiano reggiano (30 months ripen) costs around 800 euro top (have checked it now), the wheel weighs whooping 38 kilograms. That's just a fair price. You want something 'so expensive' from Italy? – try the aromatic oil from the Iris root – 1 ml (20 drops) for up to 300 Euro. And it is also made with bacterial process over years.
